Public Space Improvement Planning

It all starts with planning. We endeavor to identify aspects of Old City that might be improved to the benefit of our community and all those who visit. Once we identify such an opportunity, we do our best to utilize all available resources to effectively plan, design, and execute.

The grounds surrounding our local firehouse are examples of many such plans executed in series within budget, on time, with respectable durable results. Old City Green then follows up with routine maintenance to ensure that the improved public space or infrastructure remains in serviceable condition for all to enjoy.

The Commerce Street Walkway improvements planned is another example.

Commerce Walkway Improvements

Below, you can view images of the concept plan, and details of the subsequent detailed plan we hope to construct soon. This includes a preview from the “Pricing Set” of documents for the Commerce Street Connector project, prepared by Ground Reconsidered, project landscape architects. While not yet 100% complete, these documents provide a glimpse of the project scope and intent. Completion of construction documents and bid drawings is currently underway.

Funding for this project, championed by Councilman Mark Squilla, has recently been included in the City’s 2025 Budget.

In partnership with our friends at Old City District, Independence Historic Trust, Philadelphia Department of Parks & Recreation, the goal is to complete build out prior to the Semiquincentennial Celebration in July of 2026.
